Any good rule of thumb as far as how far back I should trim them? Or leave it to the experts?

It's really a visual thing. I'll probably need to show you.

I cant handle this job..... As a nurse I can do some of the worst things ... but trimming my doggers nails....holding them while its done... I am out. I suppose I dont want to be one of the "bad" guys. Just cant do it... gives me a creepy feeling in the pit of my stomach. Advice.. trim them short

Real test is clipping the 40 year old parrots nails, things are as sharp as needles and so is his beak... heavy gloves and I still come out bleeding. Its just one chore I dont care for, not at all

See, I'll do dog nails all day, but I am not going to be the bad guy on my parrot (Congo African Gray). He's too smart and will hold a grudge!

I guess my biggest fear is cutting them too short and hurting her a little bit (or a lot if you ask her)

I hate it when that happens. Blood and all.

If you do get a tad short on the nails, and hit the blood, a dab of flour works wonders to stop the bleeding. Seriously.

Corn starch works even better. If all else fails superglue is helpful too!
