We are relocating from Fargo, ND to Fort Mill this summer. We have two dogs, Maddie, a CKCS female aged 8, and Grady, a Shnauzer/poodle cross male aged 2 1/2. Both are neutered and up to date on all their vaccinations in ND. I have some questions just to make sure that my dogs are cared for properly during the move and while we get settled in:

1. What is the rabies vaccination guideline in SC?
2. Do you recommend that I treat with frontline or Advantix? My dogs have always done well with Frontline. But I'm sure fleas and ticks are more aggressive in SC than they are this far north?
3. My dogs are currently taking Heartguard. Is that OK?
4. Maddie has a sensitive GI tract and has done really well on IVD Venison and Potato. Do you carry that food?

Thanks!

Hey Soccermom! Welcome (when you get here) to the area!

Hope your move goes smoothly.

Answers to your questions:

1. SC law allows Rabies vaccinations every 3 years after the first year.
2. I've recently started carrying Advantix over Frontline as we are starting to see resistance to Frontline.
3. Heartgard is a good product but I prefer Interceptor for the more complete parasite coverage.
4. I don't carry IVD brands but can get it for you if you give me some lead time or I can recommend an alternative.

Thanks for your quick reply Doc! Are you seeing a resistance in your area to the Frontline, or switching dogs more as a precautionary measure? Since my dogs do well on Frontline already, I'd like to keep them on it unless it's a known problem in the area. Especially with Maddie's system and the stresss they will be under from moving anyway.

Regarding the IVD, I really would like to keep them on the same food. Maddie has had serious bouts with colitis in the past. She can't even tolerate Hills Prescription diet I/D dry! It does have lots of corn it in and maybe that's why. She ate Solid Gold Hund n Flocken for two years and they changed their processing, and boom, trouble city. I have to cook for her then until she gets back under control and the whole experience is so much less than fun. I've just had a lot of trouble finding something that works for her. I need to know that whatever it is, the ingredients and proportion of ingredients is not going to change - so I love the IVD. But if you have something you think will work just as well, I'd like to hear about it and I'll do some research. I just can't risk those terrible bouts of diarrhea while I'm moving into a new house.

I'll stop in for the frontline and heartworm preventative when we get to town in early August.

Thank you!
