The fat cat of mine is constantly going bonkers scratching at his ears and such. Sound like ear mites? Or should I take him in to the vet for them to check it out? What is the usual treatment?

Ear mites are a definite possibility for itchy ears in a cat. Especially if he goes outside. The diagnosis is as simple as viewing the mites under low magnification. Treatment is usually some sort of mitacidal solution. I use 1% ivermectin in each ear 2 weeks apart. That usually knocks it right out.

That makes ear mites a lot less likely diagnosis. It may just be seasonal allergies.

Cats don't tolerate the rubbing alcohol as good as dogs. It's worth a try though.

I took tubby to the vet today and she said he does not have ear mites! But he had quite a bit of ear wax built up. Great now the cat is purposely trying to go deaf just not to listen to me! She gave me some new stuff for the fleas since the frontline wasn't working well.
